Some Relief from the Winter Chill

Players turned in some solid performances in the Keith Hotel Motel Stroke round, played in chilly winter conditions on Saturday.

Playing on a brilliantly green and well presented course, players received some relief via occasional bursts of sunshine, but the cold winter wind was a constant companion that challenged accuracy and punished heavily slices and hooks. Best scores for the day came from Tyler Bleasby and Dean Dunsford who both maximized their opportunities on the day, shooting Nett 71’s to win the A and C Grades respectively. Dunsford went around the course playing solid golf, keeping to the fairways and able to escape from difficult situations, including some long putts and accurate chips, to keep his score down. Bleasby played his regular long hitting game, dealing with the wind effectively including his effort on the third where his second shot to the green was the nearest to the pin.

In the conditions players worked hard with any score close to par a victory. The B Grade exemplified this where Tim Hedges shot a Nett 76, three over his handicap to win the grade, with Andrew Morris a further two strokes back, courtesy of a Nett 78. Players in the A Grade also produced some quality play in the heavy air, Bradley Sherriff shooting level with his handicap, a Nett 73, which included a Nearest the Pin on the ninth hole, while Brenton Goldsmith shot a Nett 76 and Steve Gurr a Nett 78. In the C Grade Jim Gelton produced a Nett 75 to finish second behind Dunsford with DJ Appelkamp a further five strokes behind on Nett 80. New member Lachie Hines continued his improved form when he shot a solid Nett 81, which included a Nearest the Pin on the eleventh, where his tee shot finished just two metres from the hole. The last of the achievements for the day belonged to Bill Dunn, being the only player to land on the treacherous fourth green, winning the sharpshooter prize in the process.
